Attic Ventilation 2/19/2024

Attic Ventilation

It's not a good idea to open up your attic in your garage, and here's why:

1. Firstly, it isn't a firebreak. Additionally, if the underside of the attic access doesn't have sheetrock or metal, we need to avoid it.

2. Fumes can get trapped inside your attic space, which can lead to spontaneous combustion.

3. The attic is designed to allow proper heat and air flow, so that it can breathe properly and release heat. Leaving the attic propped open will disrupt the airflow, causing extra heat to build up inside the attic space and mess up the ventilation system.

An attic needs to have proper ventilation, and this must be taken into account before a home is built. The standard calculation is to have one square foot of ventilation for every 300 square feet of ceiling space.

Most modern passive systems work by drawing in cooler air from the soffit and expelling hot air out of the ridge vent at the top of the roof. In older homes, gable vents were used on each side of the gable, which were essentially windows without glass and may have had metal slots or screens to keep animals out.

Both systems are effective, but too much heat can disrupt the airflow and compromise the ventilation system. When this happens, the cooler air will push down into the open space instead of pushing the hot air out as intended. This can cause the shingles on your roof to heat up and fail sooner than expected.

In summary, it's important not to leave your attic access open. Doing so is like poking a hole in your lung and expecting your lungs to work more efficiently. In reality, it will cause more problems in the long run.
