Dishwasher
Josephine Garis Cochrane (1839-1913) is widely known as the inventor of the first dishwasher, which was a groundbreaking achievement in 1886. She patented it and marketed it through her company, the Garis-Cochran Dish-Washing Company. Her dishwasher's success was evident at the 1893 World's Fair, where she received an award for its "best mechanical construction, durability, and adaptation to its line of work."
Cochrane's inspiration for creating the dishwasher came from her own experiences as a household manager with her husband, William. She was fed up with her best china getting chipped by hired help during her domestic chores, so she set out to find a solution.
Although Cochrane is often credited with inventing the dishwasher, it's important to note that the dishwasher's history dates back to 1850 when Joel Houghton patented the first dishwasher. Houghton's wooden box-style dishwasher featured a hand-turned wheel to splash water on dishes and included scrubbers.
When selecting a dishwasher, consider several essential factors such as loading capacity, energy efficiency, water and energy consumption, detergent options, drying options, sensor technology, noise level, and maintenance. Home inspectors, in particular, emphasize the importance of having a backflow preventer or "high loop" in the discharge hose. This preventive measure ensures that the hose rises above the point of discharge before descending to the dishwasher opening, mitigating backflow issues related to mold, fungus, and bacteria. Additionally, inspectors recommend regularly cleaning the trap at the dishwasher's bottom and checking seals for wear and tear. Proper electrical considerations, such as the dishwasher having its circuit and vigilant monitoring during operation, are also crucial for optimal performance and safety.
No matter which dishwasher you choose, ensure that it is mounted properly and rinse the dishes before placing them in the dishwasher. The more debris there is in the dishwasher, the more you will need to clean the trap which may leave residue on the glasses and plates.
