Laundry Dryer

Please remember the following information about the history and safety considerations of clothes dryers:

George T. Sampson is often credited with receiving the first US patent for an electric dryer in 1892. He refined the drying process by using suspension rods over a stove. Pochon, a French inventor, created the first hand-cranked dryer. During the Crimean War, English inventor Angela Georgina Burdett-Coutts developed a successful clothes dryer machine. Henry W. Altorfer invented and patented an electric clothes dryer in 1937. In 1938, J. Ross Moore and the Hamilton Manufacturing Company invented an automatic clothes dryer that uses an interior drum. Bendix Home Appliances invented the first completely automatic clothes washer in 1937 and the first washer-dryer combination unit in 1953. Since then, dryers have become a normal part of washing clothes, with various designs and features.

Clothes dryers are convenient and time-saving, but they also come with some safety considerations. One of the primary safety concerns with dryers is the accumulation of lint. Lint is the tiny fibers that shed from clothes during the drying process. If not properly removed, lint can build up in the lint trap, exhaust duct, and other areas of the dryer, leading to reduced airflow and increased fire risk.

The combination of heat, flammable lint, and an insufficiently ventilated dryer can pose a fire hazard. Regular cleaning of the lint trap, exhaust duct, and the area around the dryer is crucial to prevent lint buildup and reduce the risk of a fire. Proper ventilation is also essential for a dryer's safe operation. If the exhaust duct is clogged or improperly installed, it can lead to overheating and increase the risk of fire. Make sure the exhaust duct is clear, free from kinks, and vents to the outside of the home.

When installing a dryer, it's important to follow the manufacturer's guidelines and local building codes. This includes proper electrical connections, venting, and spacing to ensure adequate airflow and prevent overheating. If you have a gas dryer, there are additional safety considerations related to gas connections and ventilation. Gas leaks can pose a serious danger, so it's essential to have a professional install and maintain gas dryers.

Regular maintenance is crucial for dryer safety. This includes cleaning the lint trap after every use, periodically checking and cleaning the exhaust duct, and ensuring proper installation and ventilation. Regular maintenance can help prevent issues and prolong the lifespan of the appliance. Gas dryers can produce carbon monoxide, a colorless and odorless gas that can be dangerous in high concentrations, so it's important to ensure proper ventilation and have carbon monoxide detectors in the vicinity of gas dryers to alert occupants in case of a leak.

To ensure the safe operation of a dryer, it's crucial to read and follow the manufacturer's instructions, perform regular maintenance, and address any issues promptly. If you notice any problems with your dryer, such as overheating, unusual noises, or a burning smell, it's recommended to stop using the appliance and have it inspected by a professional.
