 LED Lighting: Benefits and trends

The LED LIght has become very popular in these last 10+ years. Led stands for Light Emitting Diode that was primarily in circuit boards and hardly needed any  power for them to activate.

Here is a little history on the LED

1962 GE came up with the first visible-spectrum (red) LED and was developed by Nick Holonyak Jr.

1994 Shuji Nakamura of the Nichia Co developed the first brightness blue LED which was crucial for creating white LED light.

2006 Philips Lumileds intrudeced the first High Power white LED which inturened made more practical for general illumination.

2009: The U.S. Department of Energy launched the L Prize competition to accelerate the development of high-performance LED lighting. Philips Lighting won the prize in 2011 with a 60-watt equivalent LED bulb.

2010s: LED bulbs became commercially viable for home use, offering better energy efficiency and longer lifespans compared to incandescent and compact fluorescent bulbs. Prices also began to drop, making them more accessible to consumers.

LED lights have significantly advanced in terms of brightness and energy efficiency compared to other types of light bulbs. For instance, a traditional 60-watt incandescent lightbulb uses 60 kilowatt-hours (kWh), whereas an equivalent LED bulb only uses 10 watts, saving around 50 kWh. This translates to an approximate annual saving of $8 per bulb when switching to LED lights. Not only does this represent tangible cost savings, but LED bulbs also have a longer lifespan and produce less heat compared to traditional options. Transitioning to LED lighting not only offers immediate benefits in terms of energy efficiency and improved lighting quality but also contributes to lasting cost savings and environmental sustainability.
